The season to be jolly is amongst us, and with the positive vibes that this festive period exudes, many tend to throw caution to the wind for the sake of fun.
Whilst we’re continuously drummed on ensuring we don’t drink and drive during the holidays, there are other risks we should add to the list; to ensure nothing stands in the way of dampening out Christmas spirit.
Here are some insights we gathered from our insurance team that will not only ensure your peace of mind but also protect your beloved home.
KEEP AN EYE ON THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
Those sparkling lights on the tree, dangling in windows and adorning the balcony put a truly magical sight to Malta’s streets and homes. Once the sun goes down, it is a treat to drive around the streets or visit friends’ houses to see what their festive creativity was up to.
However, there is a myriad of fire hazards that one should watch out during this season if lights are not used correctly. Overloading sockets and extension cords with electrical decorations can lead to overheating – possibly causing a spark or a trip in electricity.
Always switch your Christmas lights off before you head to bed as you wouldn’t want them on overnight. Dispose of old lights and switch to LED ones that come with safety certifications.
TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT DIFFERENT HEAT SOURCES AROUND THE HOUSE
There is one thing December is known for, and that’s bringing the warmth; both inside our houses to avoid the cold outside as well as through the atmosphere home owners create with their decorations.
Heat sources could be dangerous if unattended. These could include candles left to burn without supervision which might be standing on surfaces or next to flammable materials such as curtains or wood, or else a portable gas heater that has been inched too close to the sofa or bed linens.
Create your own safety zones for these heat sources, ideally some place well away from anything flammable but still close enough to enjoy their respective warmth.
LOCK BEHIND YOU BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME
This applies all year round, but especially during the festive season. December is usually full with activities and outings, and the tendency is to spend more time out than at home. Avoid attracting unwanted attention from those who might want to take advantage of your absence.
Start by locking all doors and windows, including internal doors that might have access from neighbouring streets or home. Install lights that work with timers to give the illusion that there is someone present at home. Enable your security systems and ensure your mobile is handy should you get a trigger.
CHOOSE SAFE STORAGE FOR YOUR GIFTS
We all love placing perfectly-wrapped gifts under the Christmas tree, but have you ever considered a safer option if your tree is viewable from a window or balcony?
These can easily attract unwanted attention and make your home a target. Avoid replacing by fake gifts either; prying eyes wouldn’t know the difference and attempt to burglar your home during your out-of-home hours.
CONSIDER HIDDEN WATER HAZARDS
Malta’s weather has become pretty unpredictable. Whilst certain years December sees a lot of sunshine, we’ll just have to wait and see what the last month of 2024 has in store for us.
Although snow is not an issue in Malta, irregular maintenance to waterways can cause serious issues. Proactive maintenance is something you should aim for, such as cleaning out roofs and balconies from debris after rough winds, and trimming trees and plants sitting closely to water ways to avoid blockages.
Keep windows and internal doors closed when you are not home to avoid any mini-flooding should a freak storm hit whilst you’re out, to avoid damages to walls, furniture and décor.
USE SECURE WIFI CONNECTIONS WHEN MAKING ONLINE PURCHASES
Christmas sales are going in full swing, and many even wait until they’re closer to Christmas to make their online purchases. Cyber threats are more common during these festive times, as many take out their credit cards for online purchases.
Whilst worry of stolen bank card details is a big worry, cyber security could also be linked to the use of wifi that controls smart home devices. If you’re unsure about your connection security, make sure to change your password regularly and ensure it is a strong one.
This is to season to celebrate, not just Christmas but also your home’s safety. Start by having a secure home insurance that will protect you all year round. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
