Travel during COVID-19

Heavy silence has descended upon the skies. A deafening hiatus has settled over the world.

Festive periods used to bring about myriads of celebrations and excitement that bubbles the air. As 2020 is enduring the afflictions caused by COVID-19, this year’s Christmas period will take a completely different spectacle.

One good news arises though – travelling is not completely banned. Many who are missing their customary adventures overseas are exploring the possibility of flying to closer lands to welcome the new year behind closed doors; away from large crowds and at the comfort of a luscious hotel room, snuggled up in a warm cottage away from home or with family members who live offshore.

So, for those adventurous enough to hold a plane ticket in hand, jetting off during the festivities comes with additional procedures to follow and a dash of extra care. If all this is completely new to you, we’ve listed down all the practices travellers need to follow to ensure their safety and peace of mind.

KEEP A CONSTANT WATCH ON CHANGES IN AIRLINE SCHEDULES

Given the current uncertain times, airlines are continuously modifying their flight itineraries to adjust to the most time and financial efficiencies. Watch out for any email communications from your airline provider and steer away from any urgent commitments scheduled when you arrive at your destination.

GET SWABBED

Major airlines and many countries are demanding a recent swab test result upon boarding and landing. It is your responsibility to undergo swabbing prior to your scheduled trip so as to ensure you are no risk to others around you. Furthermore, you might encounter a random swab at the airport of arrival and should your result turn out to be positive, quarantining in a foreign country under constant supervision might not be what you had in mind on how to spend the festivities. Getting swabbed after your trip is also ideal.

BE ON ALERT REGARDING QUARANTINE REQUIREMENTS

Countries have issued red, amber and green lists were obligations with regards to prior and post travelling provisions are highlighted. Choose your destination wisely.

PACK PLENTY OF MASKS AND SANITISERS

Stocking up on protection equipment should not be done in small supplies. Depending on the length of your stay, calculate the amount of protective equipment you need and pack some extra. Remember that surgical masks should be disposed of after four hours of use and cloth masks should be washed thoroughly before re-use. Fill empty travelling shampoo bottles with hand sanitizer liquid and place one in every bag.

OPT FOR A QUIET DESTINATION

The key in avoiding crowds is to stray away from urban communities and head over to tranquil districts. The countryside might be the best option.

STORE EMBASSY DETAILS

In case a lockdown is announced hastily, whether in the country you are visiting or in Malta, embassies would assist you in getting back to your residing country safely under secure procedures.

ENJOY LOW-KEY CELEBRATIONS

The 2020 Christmas and New Year celebrations have to be more reserved than possibly any other year. All over the world, governments are implementing control measures to hold back the spread of this pandemic. We all need to be responsible to ensure our loved ones’ safety and retreat from elaborate celebrations.
