How To Make Outdoor Areas At Home Safe For Adults And Children
As warmer weather makes its way into our lives, many cannot stay away from basking in the outdoor air. The circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic are still quite unstable; hence why many are reverting to their home outdoor spaces to appreciate the alfresco ambience.
Open areas pose many hidden risks for both adults and children; some of which we might be unaware of. Now is the best time to make them accessible, sturdy and safe. Spend the best of times in the outdoor air after following all safety features – whether it’s the garden, roof space, an internal yard, the balcony or the pool area.
YARD
Swings, slides and playthings should have soft surroundings, to avoid any possible injuries. Grassy terrain is the best option for soft landings. Prevent prolonged sun exposure on playground sets, to avoid the little ones from burning themselves.
Who doesn’t love an evening meal in the open air? Keep barbeques and grills away from flammable items, such as plants and branches, as well as shade parasols.
Cover drains to fend off unwelcome pests from making their way in or from getting too close to your outdoor haven.
ROOF
Keep an extra pair of shoes handy specifically for the roof. Stepping on some debris might hurt you. The shoe soles will give you good traction as you walk, should the surface get wet.
Clean the area after use. Wind might blow things away to neighbouring areas, cause damages to surrounding buildings, or block drains and cause flooding.
Keep your belongings away from the roof edge, especially if your roof overlooks the road.
BALCONY
Clean up any clutter to avoid falls, cuts or bruises. This will help you move around easier and ward off any hazards.
Move furniture away. Children can climb over them and risk falling over. Remember that little ones should always be supervised – wherever they are.
Railings should not have more than a 4-inch spacings. Place some thin netting from the inside all over the railing to steer clear of danger.
GARDEN
Install fences around flower beds and plants that may sting or inflame allergies. That way, you or other family members won’t get too close.
Set up gates to ensure pets do not go outside unsupervised.
Clean walkways frequently to disinfect from animal droppings.
POOL AREA
Hold back from installing a diving board. Adults and kids alike can easily slip and get badly injured.
Some home owners place pool covers on top of the pool’s water to keep debris out. During the summer months, when the pool area is frequented more than usual, hold off from using this technique. Pool covers do not float once water gets on their surface and may cause drowning if someone falls on it.
Secure a substantial shaded area to shelter you from the harshest summer rays. Buy shade cloths or sturdy outdoor parasols to resist tough winds.
